We will gladly explain to you divorce attorney fees and costs. We will provide you with a written fee agreement which fully explains attorney fees.
The first and most common way to pay divorce attorney fees is the hourly rate (i.e. 300.00 per hour). As the attorney works, he tracks his time and sends you a bill for the time spent on the case. Usually, “a retainer” or an advance on the fees is paid. For example, you paid 1,200 dollar retainer for 4 hours of anticipated work (at 300.00 per hour). Expenses incurred during your case are also added to your bill such as filing fees and witness fees.
The second way to hire an attorney is a flat rate. One fee covers all aspects or a specific service. For example, 1,500.00 is the retainer for a matter on a flat rate. If the attorney spends 10 hours or 15 hours on the case, you have paid the fee in full. This is common for matters that exact amounts of time can be determined.
The third way to hire an attorney is a blended fee. For example, some aspects of the case are a flat rate and extra billing will be charged if additional work beyond what is described is done.
